In Revelation 22:1–2, the river of the water of life and the tree of life are vivid and powerful symbols of eternal life, healing, and the complete restoration of God’s people. The river, described as “bright as crystal,” flows directly from the throne of God and of the Lamb (Jesus), illustrating that all true life and every spiritual blessing come from God Himself (Revelation 22:1). This imagery echoes the vision in Ezekiel 47:1–12, where a river flows from the temple and brings life and healing wherever it goes. Beside this river grows the tree of life, producing twelve kinds of fruit and yielding its harvest every month—an image of God’s abundant, never-ending provision. Its leaves are said to be “for the healing of the nations” (Revelation 22:2), revealing that in Heaven, all pain, division, and brokenness will be forever healed. This tree first appeared in Eden (Genesis 2:9), but after sin entered the world, humanity was cut off from it (Genesis 3:22–24). Now, through Jesus—the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29)—the way to the tree of life has been reopened (Revelation 2:7). Together, the river and the tree declare the glorious truth that all who are in Christ will live forever—completely healed, fully restored, and joyfully dwelling in the very presence of God.
“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb (2) through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
—Revelation 22:1-2 (ESV)
